Abstract | This volume is the first English-language publication to present findings on the effects on German unification on families and youth. Researchers based in German universities report results of studies that where started immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, which divided a common historical culture into separate nations. These investigators asked an array of questions about the culture shock resulting from reunification. How have expectations for women changed? Did socialist ideology and the institutionalization of day care produce insecure attachment and promote aggression? Did growing up in a planned economy affect the timing of major life events? Did the ideology of worldwide brotherhood diminish antiforeigner attitudes or did social isolation stoke the flames of xenophobia? How have rapid shifts in the economic sphere influenced self-control and tendencies to blame outsiders for one's own feeling of insecurity? These questions are addressed in a series of ongoing studies that sample families and youth in Germany. They are preceded by a unique synthesis of heretofore unpublished demographic data on family statistics in the two Germanies. This volume concludes with an astute commentary that explores the theoretical significance of economic and political change in altering the course of human development. (DIPF/orig.). |
