Abstract	"The idea of co-oparation does not appear to fit easily with the idea of the market. The ideology of the market in education has produced a set of images about the ways that schools will act in the future. The imagery of the education market is saturated with competition.... Co-operation is not a market image. The idea of collaboration does not fit the market: indeed it makes little sense in a description of human conduct driven by competition and financial incentives." The booklet contains 3 articles: 1) Michael Barber describes the role of the teacher unions in the 1990s in England and puts forward a "Big Idea" "of a charter, bringing together an educational alliance, committed to raising standards and trying to reconcile equality and diversity." - this is an idea made in opposition to the market. 2) David Winkley portrays the National Primary Centre which also builds on co-operation: "Acting as a kind of educational agent, searching for funding to produce teacher publications based on supported teacher action research, [it] works with local educational authorities, charities and in collaboration with private companies." 3) Mairtin Mac an Ghaill "writes about a number of secondary schools in the West Midlands which have come together to form the Birmingham Catholic Partnership."
