Abstract | The Conservative educational reforms of the 1980s and 1990s were grounded on much ideology and little research. This book brings together research and analysis of the actual results of the reform. It questions whether the upheavals in the education service will improve standards or distribute resources fairly. The contributors demonstrate that 1) a market in education cannot ensure fair provision for all, 2) 'choice' remains an illusion for most parents, 3) the reforms have eroded local democracy and centralised power, not in the hands of parents but of the Secretary of State for Education, 4) resources for students with disadvantages and learning difficulties have been cut.... The authors describe a vision of an educated democracy in which a good education would form the basis for an economic, political and cultural order from which no one would be excluded.
