Abstract	"This report is an update and extension of a study conducted in 1985- 87 of the educational and vocational guidance services for young people in the Member States of the European Community. The present report examines guidance services not only for young people but also for adults. It also pays more attention than the earlier study to the European dimension in guidance provision." The first section of the report summarizes the policy rationale for guidance services, the Community dimension, i. e. the Commissions interest in provision of effective educational and vocational guidance services within the Member States and outlines the purpose and structure of the report. The second section "examines the existing guidance structures in the Member States, drawing comparisons and contrasts where appropriate. Section three looks more specifically at the changing role of professional guidance services, including issues related to their staffing and training. Section four explores linkages between services, covering the rationale for such linkages and some of the forms which they take in practice. Section five examines developments in relation to the European dimension, including current activities both at Community level and within Member States. Finally section six summarizes the main trends which can be discerned since the earlier 1988 report ... ". (DIPF/text taken from the original).
