Abstract | The article analyses gender differences in employment, work patterns, occupations and income four years after graduation. It is based on a comparative research study "Careers after higher education" which covers 11 countries. It describes the process of building gender disparities. While the educational background of men and women is similar at the entrance of higher education, the process of differentiation sets in with the choice of field of study, according to the familiar pattern of women being the majority in humanities, education and health studies whilst engineering and maths remaining a male preserve. The other aspects highlighted in the article are working time, which is shorter for women than for men, and the choice of sector, women being more numerous in public sector jobs than men. The critical impact of family, i.e. having or not having children, on working time and income by gender is also reviewed. [Data were gathered by a standardized questionnaire covering the 1994-95 graduate cohort]. ( DIPF/Orig.) |
