Abstract | The author, after a brief description of the history of Aboriginal education, analyses some of the problems which Aboriginal students have with their schools, i.e. their disadvantages and discrimination in the majority school system. Some of these problems are: racism in schools, neglect in the classroom, the curriculum which is eurocentric, recruitment and training of non-Aboriginal teachers [there are few Aboriginal teacher students], the "reality of poverty". Possible solutions are proposed such as bicultural schooling, parental and community involvement of Aborigines, a better implementation of the education policy which the Commonwealth Government launched in 1989. Many of the Aboriginal people "are convinced that the answer is empowerment of the indigenous population." (DIPF/Bi.) |
