| Abstract | This article draws on data collected ... from a number of secondary schools located in a northern suburban, working class area of Melbourne. It focuses on the rise and decline of an academically oriented high school in the context of the geographical location it served. I argue that the differentiated roles occupied by schools in close geographical proximity, particularly as these are related to social selection and curriculum differentiation, are not a static phenomenon, but respond more or less successfully, to changing community expectations and youth labour force patterns. In the case of Victoria High, the school's inability to adapt to these changing needs saw its academic function being taken over by neighbouring schools more willing to adapt to new student populations and their more diverse expectations.
