AbstractThe article gives an account of some findings of an investigation into linguistic variation in Neckarau, a suburb of the central German city of Mannheim. One aim of the study was to establish whether stable norms have been or are being established for 'colloquial German' (Umgangssprache), if it can indeed be regarded as a discrete variety. The traditional way of describing and classifying variation in German is to posit three relatively discrete varieties or gradata: Standardsprache, Umgangssprache and Dialekt. On the basis of his data the author shows that this does not coincide with speakers' perceptions of linguistic reality. He also shows that it is not suitable as a model to describe objective linguistic reality, but that the setting up of 'Umgangssprache' as a gradatum in this model is based on a conception of variety that is not suitable for describing the contemporary linguistic situation in central German urban centres such as Mannheim. 'Umgangssprache' is not a variety in a traditional sense: for various reasons, focusing seems to take place at the level of individual variants rather than at the level of the system as a whole, and there is more inter-individual variation in its use than one would expect in a focused variety. The last section of the article deals with the difficulties of explaining why certain linguistic variants acquire social meaning, i. e. are the object of focusing, and why others do not.
