Abstract | "As the international move to decentralize national school systems and embrace local level intitiatives continues to accelerate, the need to accomodate increasingly diverse purposes for schooling also necessarily grows." In Mali, a project of community schools was initiated and is still operating. It emphasizes accomodation to local priorities, local village context and resulted in a curriculum "that emphasizes local knowledge combined with (and within) the classic subject areas." The paper describes the methods and findings from a 3-week evaluation study of 13 project schools and 12 government schools to measure efficiency and quality of the project schools, especially what can be said about the "local knowledge" which students acquire in these schools. The "possible factors affecting school quality" are discussed. (DIPF/Bi.) |
