| Abstract | The nature of the relationship established between teacher and student is the center of such approaches to teaching and learning as counseling-learning and the community language learning methodology associated with it. Counseling-learning is one of many instances of the influence of humanistic psychology on teaching in general and on second language teaching in particular. Less well known in the world of education is the tradition of psychoanalytic psychology, with its emphasis on unconscious personal and interpersonal processes. In the article some important and useful concepts from this domain are introduced, including the learning alliance driven by mutual commitment to the task by teacher and student, issues of "holding", boundary maintenance, idealization, identification, narcissistic vulnerability, teacher "abstinence" and effects of stages of learning readiness. Some of the concepts parallel the betterknown ones from the humanistic tradition, whereas others reflect a different but potentially very helpful point of view. (Verlag). |
