Abstract | The article is based on an empirical cross-sectional study on the L2 acquisition of 21 Turkish and Kurdish asylum seekers in the German- speaking part of Switzerland. The main results of the empirical study can be summarised as follows: The L2 acquisition of asylum seekers takes place under extreme psychosocial conditions. For a majority of the asylum seekers, language contacts with Swiss people outside the classroom are rare and often overshadowed by negative encounters. However, language contacts outside the classroom in which the learner plays an active role are crucial for successful language learning. Discourse analysis shows that the fastest learners use combinations of discourse techniques like self-initiated self-repair, request for linguistic help and comprehension checks. Roughly 70 percent of the self-initiated self-repair attempts result in an actual repair of the "incorrect" utterances, i. e. they afterwards correspond with the target norm. The discourse analysis also shows that beginners depend on the helping role of L1 speakers when they communicate. Language acquisition does not only require input, but above all interaction.
