| Abstract | The essay examines representations of India in three contemporary travelogues: Ingborg Drewitz's Mein indisches Tagebuch (1983), Günter Grass's Zunge zeigen (1988), and Hubert Fichte's Wolli Indienfahrer (1978). The study analyzes in what ways India is experienced and discursively represented within the distinct narrative framework of each travelogue and how the problem of mediation - namely, the influence on the traveler of past and current concepts of India - is dealt with in each. It argues that, based on the current Third World discourse, Drewitz and Grass adopt a largely hegemonic position toward India, whereas Fichte (like his protagonist) does not assign it a fixed identity. Instead, he displays a self-reflexive, non-authoritarian stance by which he is able to critique and circumvent the dominant depiction of India as Third World Other. (Verlag). |
