Abstract | ESL teachers and students of advanced grammar are aware that certain technical aspects of English grammar are neither adequately nor partically addressed in either "advanced" textbooks or in formal linguistic research. One such aspect of English grammar is the postponed or "double genitive" (DG). The paper will examine through a text analysis of spoken and written discourse the meaning and function of the DG in comparison to the inflected preposed genitive. The DG will be shown to possess unique and specific pragmatic functions which have not as yet been adequately described for the non-native speaker/writer. In doing so, the author will not only provide a comprehensive and useful description of the DG, but will also demonstrate text analysis to be an effective analysis tool for both teachers and learners of foreign languages.
