| Abstract | The article shows the history of the teaching of English in China. It demonstrates "the correspondence between macro politics and the English curriculum in terms of both curriculum development and pedagogics promoted." Curriculum development "was crafted by a superordinate agency, the PEP [People's Education Press] which administered macro policy decisions made by the national government but was also influenced by feedback from intermediate and subordinate agencies." Syllabuses and textbooks were produced by this agency. The authors describe these developments in five periods: 1) the end of Soviet influence (1956 - 60), 2) a search for quality in education (1960 - 66), 3) the Cultural Revolution (1977 - 93), 4) modernization under Deng Xiaoping (1977 - 93), 5) towards nine years' compulsory education.(DIPF/Bi) |
