Abstract | The intention of this articel is to describe the thought and influence of George Combe, because he was one of the most influential reformers in early Victorian Britain. His efforts to raise thequality of life for the working poor through mass education and the ethic of self- improvement inspired many prominent figures and millions of ordinary people. He articulated a clear and concise Baconian philosophy of progress: scientific knowledge of ourselves, the world and society can be the instrument of human betterment. Combe mounted a comprehensive attack on the classical curriculum and the culture of terror that supported it. By focusing on the laws governing the child's mind, he made a powerful case for Pestalozzian pedagogy and the training of teachers with a scientific understanding of human development. |
