Abstract | The aim of this study is to explore the educational opportunities provided beyond secondary education in Central and Eastern European countries which emerged both in efforts to upgrade and raise the quality of vocational education and to establish alternatives to university programmes. The study aims to provide an overview of: 1) the patterns of tertiary/post-secondary education actually emerged: the enrolment figures, institutional structures, the educational programmes, and the ways the programmes aim to prepare for subsequent work; 2) the steering of tertiary/post-secondary education, i. e. the legislation, the role governments play in the co-ordination and supervision of the system, the internal administration, the co-operation between the educational institutions and the world of work in delibertion and decision-making, and the modes of assessment of tertiary/post-secondary education institiutions and programmes.
