Abstract	The author provides a critical analysis of the latest reforms in post-16 education in the U. K. from the perspective of core skills, general education and unification. The failure of raising the standards in general subjects despite the introduction of 'core skills' into vocational curricula is related to the characteristics of the U. K. reform policy, as well as to continuing historical divisions between the academic and vocational. The response to youth unemployment and growing participation in post-compulsory education has led to the decline of the apprenticeship-training - which, to some extent, was related to a cultural tradition and knowledge-base - and creating a culture- and theory-free, competence-based educational alternative for those who were failing to achieve general education through the traditional A- levels route. According to the author, the way ahead is not reducing the full-time, school-based studies, but strengthening the role of institutional education. (DIPF/orig.).
