Abstract | The purpose of this study is to show modern European pedagogic influences emerged in western Hungary at the end of the eighteenth century. These influences, ideas and teaching became especially evident in western Hungarian cities which had Lutheran schools. Special mention is made of contributions by Jacob Spener and August Hermann Francke. In western Hungarian cities, such as Sopron, Pozsony and Györ, most of the citizens were Lutherans. From Lutheran schools in these cities, students often continued their higher education at the universities of Halle, Wittenberg and Jena. After their return to Hungary these men regularly worked as pastors and scientists as well as teachers and rectors in their former schools. There they modernized the teaching programmes, wrote new textbooks and introduced the scientific practices they had learned ... abroad. (DIPF/orig.). |
