Abstract | Since the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 people have been witnessing a vast growth of nationalism in almost all regions of the globe. As religious zeal is very often mixed with a sense of cultural and ethnic differences, new types of statecentrism cause a rather high frequency of civil wars or political violence and terrorism in changing societies. This can be taken as a symptom of the absence of leading principles to guide the socio-political reconstruction in the societies concerned. Against the background of the struggle towards solutions of political disorders and social instability the author intends to clarify the hidden contexts of " problems in education" from the viewpoint of the shifting geopolitical dimensions of social life. Shifts resulting from new media and problems as a result of the centre-periphery division are dealt with in detail. Finally the feasibility of the profile approach in comparative studies is analyzed.
