Abstract | This book provides, in an accessible way, the essential ideas and concepts underlying the management of autonomous schools. It aims to present theoretical frameworks which are valuable for conceptualising management and managing, and to demonstrate how these frameworks are valuable in analysing and developing practice. The book explores the freedoms which self-management brings and also the restraints of such autonomy. It provides a background to the contemporary context for schools in England and Wales before examining the functional areas of management. Each of these sections includes conceptual frameworks and recent research evidence on self-managing schools. A final section presents three unifying themes for self-managing schools - leadership, curriculum development and learning organizations. (DIPF/Orig. text). |
