Abstract | The study reported in this paper evaluated a Vygotskian approach to understanding the development of a European identity. This was achieved by investigating the relative power of cognitive, affective and socio-cultural factors (social class, travel experience and parental attitude) in explaining identification with Europe. 329 English children and adolescents were interviewed and their parents received a questionnaire. The sample ranged from 6 to 16 years of age. The result of a discriminant function analysis showed socio-cultural factors explained variance in European identification in addition to that already explained by cognitive and affective factors. This finding supports the Vygotskian assertion that socio-cultural factors are important in developing and understanding of children's identification with Europe. The discussion focusses on the need for further research to investigate the social processes involved in the development of a European identity. (DIPF/abstract taken from the original). |
