Abstract | The paper contains two parts: in the first part it provides a short diagnosis of the major feature of education in South America, reviewing the national realities of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela. These features are, inter alia: a social responsibility that is delegated or transferred to the school itself; the application, by the latter, of a methodology which is heavily traditional; the absence of a terminal objective for education; and the overwhelming orientation of the process towards the entrance at the University. In the second part of the paper, the author depicts the role that Latinamerican education must be called to play in the coming century. ... Among the challenges that have to be overcome, he mentions that the pedagogic model must play an increasingly active role, with a stronger emphasis on technology, and a clearer final objective.
