Abstract | This article examines the history of teacher education in the Province of British Columbia, Canada over this century. It argues that from subject-based examinations to the development of Normal Schools to the transfer of all teacher education to the universities, British Columbia's system for the education and certification of teachers was much like that found in most Anglo-Saxon countries. The enactment of the Teaching Profession Act in 1987, establishing the BC College of Teachers as a professional body with jurisdiction over certification and discipline, challenged this unified approach. The authors review the College's efforts to establish itself and exercise its legislative mandate. They conclude that despite problems the College has raised the awareness and importance of teacher education in BC and may help forestall the move to school-based and/or alternative certification practices found in Britain and in the United States.
