Abstract | Preventive education is coming down to earth. It has moved from a purely theoretical, somewhat dictatorial approach that did not take local conditions into account, to a far more realistic strategy. Multi- media campaigns with uncertain results are being replaced by projects that rely on direct contact and dialogue. Social workers in Bolivia for example go out to meet impoverished children in the streets. Likewise school cantines ensure that children eat at least one square meal a day and learn about the importance of good nutrition in Côte d'Ivoire. Puppet shows pack a powerful AIDS prevention message in South Africa and school children in Togo are making their parents aware of the need for environmental protection. Programmes are also underway to teach people to build more resistent homes in earthquake zones and the "population bomb" will not explode in Fiji thanks to efforts being undertaken there. In all these domains UNESCO provides a wealth of teaching materials and general information. (DIPF/Abstract taken from the original). |
