Abstract"I will argue in this paper, that the social relations of the family have an especially important impact on schooling in many rural areas of the developing world, where family labour is crucial for household survival. This is the case even where the household and family plot is not the chief source of livelihood. Such is the case in the part of west Mexico which is the empirical focus of this paper, based on an anthropological field study of school and community in Acatlán, central Jalisco between 1987 and 1992. In this area, most households rely mainly on wages. I will show that variations in school performance are not explained by whether the children perform productive work or not. They are rarely asked to contribute in this way. Nor do the costs of schooling make a great dent in most households' resources. What most affects schooling is the "moral economy" of the household rather than the political economy of the workplace. Where particular hardship is met in the home by an increased workload on the women, and by her and her children's deepened subjection to the father's authority, the educational futures of the children are curtailed. In other words it is the conversion of economic hardship into moral dependence which undermines educational progress. Education is thus closely related to the emancipation of women and children, as the title to this paper suggests." (DIPF/Text uebernommen).
