Abstract | After describing the changing external environment, including international agencies and the challenges and constraints facing universities themselves, the paper surveys the surrent state of Canadian universities' international activities. It is argued that universities have been slow to respond to the challenges of internationalization, and have missed many important opportunities. Internally, universities need fresh approaches to policies and programs which will maximize the inter-connectedness and mutual reinforcement of international activities. Institutions need to become more enterpreneurial in the marketing of their expertise internationally. There is an urgent need for national structures and mechanisms which will replace the present patch work for international efforts. (DIPF/Abstract uebernommen). |
