| Abstract | The author intends to "critically reflect the oppression of women in Tanzania." The rural women "live in a patrimonial society with a rigid sexual division of labour. ... Men allocate land to women for family farming, since most men consider subsistence farming as 'women's work'. .. . Women are dominated by their husbands and are discouraged from participating in politics or national issues". Educational programs for women have been developed but the author means that little progess has been made and that "adult education programs perpetuate oppression". In the light of critical education theory the article regards four areas of oppression: 1) multiplicity of women's roles, 2) family wage, 3) the nature of women's work and 4) generational inferiority that is compounded through the various educational programs.
