Abstract | This essay is a critique of current history related to the country school experience in the states of the Midwest. Further, it advances an alternative interpreting grounded in certain social, political, and economic circumstances that impinged on local institutions. According to evidence provided in this essay, it is entirely appropriate to question the received view that midwestern country school districts functioned as 'laboratories of democracy'. In fact, they sometimes worked in an opposite direction. (DIPF/ Abstract uebernommen) |
