| Abstract | Every now and then the discussion about the pros and cons of learning English in primary school begins anew, although learning a foreign language, especially English, became compulsory for primary school children in all 16 German states starting in the 2005/06 school year and is well established in law. Common to all German states is the integration of a foreign language subject into the educational and didactic principles of primary school as well as the orientation of language learning goals towards the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. These two circumstances, however, are only formal in nature. A comparison of the various learning conditions highlights the many differences among the German states in regards to which foreign is assigned. Learning goals, forms of assessment and evaluation can also vary. Finally, consideration will be given to regional or general trends in language learning. (Verlag, adapt). |
