Differentials are means to express the idea of linearization in calculus. The article gives an intuitive definition of differential and discusses its relationship to the didactical and mathematical literature. It is shown how calculus can be derived from this definition and what the structure of a possible teaching sequence may be that uses differentials from the beginning and thus puts the focus on the concept of change, not on rates of change. |
