Abstract | Charles Dickens published "Hard Times" in serial form in 1864. The main focus of the novel is a scathing critique of industrialism, which Dickens perceived as inhuman and dehumanising. Workers are reduced to being cogs in an industrial machine with no chance of either achieving self-fulfilment or escaping from the system. Things only have a value if they can be proved to be useful in a very limited sense. Does this not ring a bell with us in the 21st century with our discussions of standardised curricula, standardised testing, school league tables and education for professional purposes? The focus of this test is on comprehension, interpretation and creative writing. |
