AbstractAdvising is a critical component of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). Students may have a range of learning experiences that advisors can help translate into academic credit. Redesigning advising systems is a key part of the work that NASPA -- Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and core partner organizations are leading as part of the Advising Success Network. Rethinking systems of advising raises questions about advisor perspectives and strategies around PLA. NASPA's engagement with advising experts, emphasis on the value of learning outside the classroom, and commitment to supporting a changing student population prompts exploration of the future direction of the field. To examine the conditions around advising students about PLA and the current state of the field, NASPA conducted a research study involving: 1) video and phone interviews with practitioners in advising roles at institutions; and 2) a national survey of student affairs professionals. NASPA's research findings help address the following core research questions: (1) to what extent are shifts in higher education impacting advising practices related to PLA; (2) in what ways are advisors helping students navigate the PLA process; and (3) what do advisors perceive as key student challenges related to PLA and how are they addressing them? The authors first describe the research methods used to address these questions. Then, drawing from research findings, this brief unfolds in four sections: (1) current trends in advising; (2) advisor perspectives; (3) student needs; and (4) opportunities for collaboration and coordination. The authors end by offering several recommendations for practice based on the findings. (ERIC).
