| Abstract | "The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, have presented a challenge and opportunity for study abroad professionals working with U.S. undergraduates. ... Like many Americans, many study abroad students and their parents have expressed an increased concern about air travel safety and heightened awareness of U.S. interests being targets for terrorism abroad. ... At the same time, since September 11 there have been several positive signs that show the potential for greater public interest in intercultural learning and international affairs." The author made a study about "whether or not September 11 has had any impact on students' concerns about study abroad." Questionnaires were sent to participants in current programs and identically to students who had studied abroad before September 11. "Students were asked (1) about their initial interest in study abroad ... [and] (2) for their concerns about study abroad." One result was that there were no noteworthy differences between pre- and post 9 / 11 students - interpretations of this result are discussed. (DIPF/Orig./Bi.) |
