Abstract | Ten states now offer in-state college tuition rates to illegal immigrant students. Others are struggling to enact similar policies. But while many advocates want to open the doors to higher education for undocumented students, critics say the laws granting in-state tuition discriminate against other low-income students and legal residents of the United States. The author discusses the ongoing battle over in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. Like most political battles, this one includes thorny issues. Opinions have been folded into the larger debate on immigration with different views on the positive and negative implications of such policies. However, experts say this is all a part of the growing debate about the rights and needs of immigrants versus the costs of immigration. (ERIC). |
