Abstract	With two children already in college and three more in the wings, the Nwanguma family knows about sacrifice. The annual tuition bill for Prince George's Community College typically comes to between $3,500 and $4,000 for the oldest son, Chuka. To afford it, Chuma Nwanguma, a Nigerian immigrant, often works overtime in addition to his regular night shift as a corrections officer at a Maryland prison. His daughter, Adaku Lynda, has a scholarship at the same college. But to afford books and bus fare, she works as a nursing-home aide on weekends. Her brother patrols a storage facility several nights a week, pulling a 15-hour night shift before heading to the campus on Monday morning. Their mother, Hope Nwanguma, also works as a health aide, in addition to attending nursing school and tending to the three younger children, ages 9, 12 and 16. Back in Nigeria, Mr. Nwanguma made a good living as an assistant bank manager. After finishing work at 3 p.m., he might have played a round of tennis, then relaxed with his family before his wife, then a schoolteacher, cooked a homemade stew for the family. But wanting the best education for their five children, the Nwangumas came to America five years ago. They settled in Maryland, where their home is a short drive from the Prince George's campus.
