Abstract | In April 2007 "new" Ofsted ("old" Ofsted merged with the Adult Learning Inspectorate) became responsible for inspection of a very wide range of provision, including all post-compulsory education and training for adults. Significant changes in inspection processes had already been introduced for local authority adult and community learning (ACL) providers in 2006 and these continue to evolve. A review of the inspection reports and grades for 20 local authorities inspected as ACL providers in the past year shows that the number of ACL providers found to be inadequate in terms of overall effectiveness is now small, and so is the number judged to be outstanding, as signalled in the Ofsted Chief Inspector's Report in the Autumn. In this article, the author considers how local authorities have fared under changes to the inspection regime. (ERIC). |
