| Abstract | Poverty, inequality, and discrimination endanger women's well-being. Poverty is a consistent predictor of depression in women. Economic inequalities relate to reduced life expectancy and various negative physical health consequences. Discrimination maintains inequalities, lessens economic security, and exposes women to unmerited contempt. Relieving material hardships is only part of the solution, because living in a highly unequal society can still damage the emotional and social wellbeing of women. (Contains references.) (SM) |
