Abstract | Examines graduate education and the constricted job market PhDs have encountered during the last decade. Addresses the mismatch between the kinds of positions available and the research agenda of graduate programs. Urges departments to keep a vision of a student-oriented program, articulated in a series of "ever-broadening contexts" through keeping up with national issues, thinking ahead for the long term, and engaging in cross-disciplinary discussion.
