AbstractThe present study describes a six-week study abroad experience in which two graduate and 12 undergraduate students from Johnson C. Smith University attended Guangdong Baiyun University in China. The purpose of this present study was to better understand how Chinese language immersion programs can develop cultural humility in students. Drawing from both ethnographic and phenomenological approaches to data collection and analysis, we observed the daily interactions of the participants with Guangdong Baiyun University faculty in order to capture the cultural dynamics of the program. Using thematic analysis, results indicated that participants experienced empowerment in learning Chinese holistic practices, life transforming experiences through language immersion, internalization of Chinese values, and recognition of themselves as global citizens. Using the Cultural Humility Model, these findings suggest that Chinese language immersion programs may enable social work students to acquire the skills necessary to more effectively work with Asian populations in an effort to promote global cooperation in an interdependent world.
