Abstract | Collaborative leaders have become essential to organizations, especially health care professionals, performing efficiently and having the capabilities to manage, adapt, and sustain operations (Iachini, et al., 2019). Collaborative leadership is critical for ensuring leaders and organizations transform to become more efficient in planning, strategizing, and executing processes for success in meeting shared organizational goals. Further, the leader ensures they collaborate within a multi-organizational context to execute plans, assess performance, and continue to develop capabilities so shared visions and changes can be addressed rapidly and efficiently within the internal, or external environment (Campbell, 2018). The study describes the examination of how leaders were educated, and or gained experience collaborating, so they are confident and competent to perform their roles as part of leadership. This research presents feedback from professionals within the Human Services sector on how they prepared to lead, and perform as collaborators within their teams, organizations, and partnerships. The mixed methods research consisted of a collaborative leadership self-assessment that measured professionals' self-reported practical application of six competencies. Then individuals who were identified as leaders practicing the competencies most frequently, participated in interviews and provided feedback regarding their experience preparing for their leadership roles and capabilities to shape their teams to collaborate, be dynamic, and perform efficiently. The results provide insight into best practices for leadership preparation at academic and professional development levels.
