AbstractThis research by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for Sutton Trust examined the English education system and its apprenticeship programs. BCG reported that the UK is failing nearly half its young people by providing inadequate vocational opportunities. BSG presents key findings that include: (1) more than four in ten people have only low level qualifications with little value in the labour market; (2) the UK system of vocational education and training is far more complex than in any of the other leading economies and creates a state of confusion and bewilderment among students, parents and employers; (3) the UK needs to create between 150,000 and 300,000 quality apprenticeships each year. These should include a mix of new jobs for young people aged 16-24 who are at school, at college, or entering the labour market. These should be offered directly by employers or be innovative apprenticeships linked to small firms and training providers; and (4) apprenticeships are of low quality, lasting only one year, compared with other leading economies, where three years is the norm. The BCG offered a host of recommendations that, if followed, would see the apprenticeship program make vast improvements. The report also includes the appendix: Benefits to the economy. (ERIC).
