AbstractThe purpose of the current study was to assess how college and university alumni view their role within these institutions and how that perception relates to behaviors of support. This study sought to answer three specific research questions: (1) How do levels of role identity as a college or university alumnus(a) affect support behaviors? (2) Do generational differences in the role identity of college and university alumni exist and how might that finding correspond with support behaviors? (3) Does differences between institutional cues and social cues in regards to alumni expectations exist which may influence support behaviors? A self-administered, web-based survey was administered to a sample of Indiana University alumni during the spring of 2011. The results found that increases in alumni role identity did correlate to greater support of the institution; generational differences in alumni role identity do exist which can impact corresponding support behaviors; and social cues used to prompt support behaviors were found to be more effective than institutional based cues. The results of the study are discussed along with directions for further research and concluding remarks. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
