AbstractWhat do solitude experiences offer in this increasingly high-speed, technically dependent world? As this book inspiringly reveals, solo quests can provide powerful reconnection with the natural world, the true self, and the great mystery beyond. As Parker Palmer writes in "To Know as We Are Known," "Solitude calls us to confront ourselves...to learn who we really are and what we can rely on." This book provides theoretical frameworks, guidelines, and activities for facilitators of solo experiences, and also reviews current research. It is rich in professional and personal insights and strategies shared by 22 authors with deep experience in the practice of solo. The following essays are presented: (1) Going Outside to Go Inside: Frameworks for the Solo Experience (Thomas E. Smith); (2) The Mountains Can't Always Speak for Themselves: Briefing and Debriefing the Solo Experience (Clifford E. Knapp); (3) The Rites of Passage Vision Quest (Mike Bodkin and Linda Sartor); (4) Growing and Deepening the Solo with a Creative-Reflective Journal (William F. Hammond); (5) Wilderness, Solitude, and Monastic Traditions (Andrew J. Bobilya); (6) Reflections on Solo in Outward Bound (Mary-Laurence Bevington); (7) The Life Significance of a Wilderness Solo Experience (Brad Daniel); (8) Lessons from the Field: Participant Perceptions of a Multi-Day Wilderness Solo (Andrew J. Bobilya, Leo H. Mcavoy, and Kenneth R. Kalisch); (9) Coming Home: Adolescents and the Nature-Based Solo (John Maxted); (10) The Use of Solos in Canadian College and University Outdoor Education and Recreation Programs (Tom Potter and Tim O'Connell); (11) Leadership and the Wilderness Vision Quest (Burke Miller); (12) Erazim, Sigurd, My Students, and Me: Thinking about Solo (Bob Henderson); (13) The Whisper of the Wilderness: Applying Personal Solo Learnings in Teaching Others (Deborah Eads Greene); (14) Solo's Effect on Group Attitude (William J. Quinn); (15) Solo Experiences in the Summer Camp (Faith Evans); (16) Exercises and Activities to Prepare for the Solo Experience (Thomas E. Smith); (17) Sauntering: A Soul-Journey in the Woods with Thoreau as My Guide (Tom Owen-Towle); (18) Two Letters from Solo (Elias Amidon); (19) Visiting Dreamland (David Sobel); (20) The Silence That Isn't Really Silent (Chris Heeter); (21) Hanbleceya: To Cry in the Prayer of Vision Seeking (Clifford E. Knapp); and (22) Solitude for Growth and Healing: 10 Memories (Thomas E. Smith). (Individual essays contain references.) (ERIC).
