Abstract | Preparing for the Drug Free Years (PDFY) is a family intervention program that seeks to help parents avoid specific parenting practices that increase the risk for adolescent problem behaviors and to increase practices that are likely to enhance family communication and bonding. The PDFY curriculum is designed for universal application and has been used and adapted with a broad range of various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds while targeting parents of children in grades four through seven. This issue of the Bulletin provides an overview of the PDFY parenting program and summarizes the results of studies of the program. The studies provide evidence that the PDFY program is appropriate for general and diverse populations and that it can be successfully disseminated. These studies also show that PDFY improves parenting practices in ways that reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors for adolescent problem behaviors.
