Abstract | A study used data for the 1987 calendar year from the 1986 and 1987 panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) to examine the impact of union membership on women's wages and job tenure. The data set included 17,200 sample members, representing about 79 million workers, aged 16-64. The study mapped the distribution of union women and men workers across the economy in terms of occupation, industry, and size of firm and by education level. This map illustrated the changing face of unions as women become a higher proportion of their membership and reflected the changes in union membership from blue-collar to white-collar occupations, from manufacturing to professional specialty industries, and from high school to college graduates. Findings helped explain the increase in union membership among higher wage women workers between 1984-87 and suggested union membership was increasingly characterized by a new diversity. Statistical regression techniques were used to estimate the importance of union membership, relative to other factors, in increasing hourly wages for women. Unions increased women's wages by 12 percent; for union members, unions decreased the wage gap between men and women from 32 to 25 percent; and unions appeared to especially benefit minority women who gained 13 percent per hour.
