Abstract | This document is a Spanish translation of a resource book designed to help parents help their children with the process of making decisions about college. Its purpose is to help parents to: set high expectations for their children's future; know what college options are available; plan their finances with college in mind; and know what financial assistance may be available. Using a question-and-answer format, the following topics are covered: (1) general questions about college, e.g., why attend college? what types of colleges exist? and what kinds of jobs are available to college graduates? (2) preparing for college, including what can a child do to prepare academically for college? and what can a child do outside the classroom to prepare for college? (3) choosing a college; (4) financing a college education, including: how much does a college education cost? how can a parent afford to send a child to college? what are the most common sources of financial aid? how can parents determine if a particular child is eligible for financial aid? and what are some ways to keep the cost of college down? (5) long-range planning; (6) important terms; and (7) other sources of information. Appended exercises and checklists provide materials on thinking about careers, a course planner for parent and student, college information, a college preparation checklist for students, and a financial preparation checklist for parents.
