AbstractThe Wayson School Climate and Context Inventory (SCCI) was used in previously reported comparative studies of six good high schools in Tennessee and Kentucky (three in each state). This study added data for three similar high schools in North Carolina to bring the pool of data to nine schools, making possible the determination of similarities and differences in SCCI items and the identification of climate characteristics rated high and low in high schools. The 3 North Carolina schools generated responses from 140 faculty members. The climate of all nine schools has been enhanced by administration and faculty giving attention to the development of clear, written rules and procedures and extensive efforts to communicate these rules and procedures. Climate has also been enhanced by the use of due process procedures for students. Teachers in these schools have a great deal of autonomy in instructional decision making, and a real effort has been made by educators to know students and include them in activities. Identification of the low rated climate characteristics shows areas in which schools can improve, largely through parent, staff, and student involvement. Four tables list ranked SCCI items. Appendix A presents the SCCI; and appendixes B, C, and D list item scores, analysis of variance test results, and SCCI item rankings, respectively. (SLD)
