Abstract | This guide is intended to serve administrators, curriculum directors, and teachers as a resource to develop or enhance the existing health education curriculum. After two introductory chapters that provide an overview of the Montana health education curriculum and its 10 content areas, the document provides guidelines for high school, junior high, and elementary levels on the following topics: (1) accident prevention and safety; (2) community health; (3) consumer health; (4) environmental health; (5) family life education; (6) mental and emotional health; (7) nutrition; (8) personal health; (9) prevention and control of disease; and (10) substance use and abuse. Each content area chapter includes the following components: topics, rationale, life goals, student objectives, and sample lessons. The concluding chapter discusses current and future issues in health education. The appendixes include the following: a role description for a health education coordinator; information on national, state, and local resources; practical principles in the effective use of print materials; an evaluation checklist for a school health education program; Montana school accreditation standards; certification requirements for Montana health teachers; and criteria for comprehensive school health education.
