AbstractIn the past several years, numerous educational climate instruments and questionnaires have been developed. One such instrument is the Charles F. Kettering (CFK) School Climate Profile, a popular measure of school climate that is widely used to gather data for administrative planning and curriculum revision. The instrument is patterned on the perceptual measurement--individual attribute approach to measuring and conceptualizing climate and refers to individual attributes. The individual attributes are seen as the intervening psychological process whereby the individual translates the interaction between perceived organizational attributes and individual characteristics into a set of attitudes, behaviors, and expectations. This study examines general climate profile responses from four schools with 822 subjects (school personnel and students). Principal component factor analysis indicated unidimensionality of the scale. Additional analyses suggest different subscales than those given for the CFK instrument. Subscale and response category modifications designed to improve overall scale validity and reliability are offered. The subscale revisions may indicate more reliable factors for examination of organizational climate than are present in the original CFK. Analysis of reading level in the CFK indicates caution in use with slow readers or those below grade 9. The document includes 14 tables and a 22-item bibliography. (JB)
