Abstract | A general education cluster course structure at the State University of New York, Plattsburgh, is described. Philosophy, anthropology, and geography classes met separately to cover the different disciplines, and joint sessions for learning exercises were held. Cluster course objectives were: to provide undergraduates with a broad and integrative general education experience; create an active learning atmosphere, and develop a design that could be sustained in a disciplinary environment with either a core or category-type general education program. The joint sessions are built around contemporary issues, and the pedagogy requires active exploration of the relationship between values and decisions. Exercises used in the joint session are described, and exercises that have been successful and unsuccessful are included as illustrations. The exercises include a panel discussion, role playing, and exercises involving small group and large group activities. The cluster structure can be applied to different disciplines and changes in faculty can be accomplished without much administrative interference. One difficulty was coordination on the course outline and the selection of written materials and exercises. (SW) |
